Future Surgery launch

Future Surgery is a podcast produced by the surgical data science team at the University of Edinburgh and is a sister site to DataSurg.

We aim to produce clear and factful podcasts on all things surgical. Factful may be an odd choice of word. It is inspired by Hans Rosling’s book, Factfulness. This is an inspiring read and I’m currently recommending it to everybody unfortunate enough to speak to me.

Future surgery will be accessible. This does not meaning dumbing down, but it will aim to be jargon free and light in tone.

As with all our work, we will try to emphasise facts, data, and evidence. Three words for the same thing.

We will try to avoid the temptation to be sensation and to overstate the short term implications of findings. Something I will find difficult! But we will try to put discussions within the a broader context – approaches to surgery and outcomes from it are improving year on year in every country.

Everything we cover will be with an eye to the future. From technology in surgery, to issues in global surgery, to using trials and data to make surgery better, we will always be looking to how things will develop over the coming years.

Most importantly, all our chat will steer back to what is most important – the patients who are undergoing surgery. And with that in mind, our first discussions are not about technology, or data, or trials. But simply about understanding the diagnosis of cancer.
